I was diagnosed with cancer when I was 14. I learned that I had Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia and that my prognosis was not good because of my age. My treatments involved three years of countless treatments and painful tests. One day, I was a freshman in high school and the next day I wasn't sure if I would make it to my high school graduation.
I wanted to keep a positive attitude and I truly believe that staying positive helped me to survive. Although in the beginning some people thought my life was indeed over, many others saw my determination and supported me and my will to live. Two weeks after my diagnosis, I was back in school and on the basketball court.
After my original questions about why this happened to me, I came to the conclusion that God gave me this fight for a reason. I wanted to prove to everyone that you could have cancer and live a normal life and survive. This became my personal goal and made me stronger.
I had three dreams that I wanted most in life. One was to get married. I married my best friend, Jimmie Channon, and we have been married 20 years. The second dream was to be a mommy, but we didn't know if I could have children because of all the chemo treatments. The odds were against us, but today I have two healthy teenage boys, Cole and Case. My third dream was to be a teacher. I'm now celebrating my 20th year as a kindergarten teacher.
You really beat the odds and beat cancer. It has been 25 years since I went off chemo. My mom's journal that she kept during my illness was a precious reminder of how this journey affected not only me but my loved ones as well. Three Dreams Ago tells my story from both my experiences as a young teenager and my mother's pain as she stood by my side through the tragedies and triumphs of leukemia.
At the end of each chapter are "Hints for Hope." These are things I would do to help push through and some things I wish I would have done. I want to give hope to others who are fighting cancer.
I worked on this book off and on for almost 15 years. It was published by Brown Books in Dallas, Texas. I am overwhelmed at the response I am getting. I just want to continue to help others through by giving my testimony. Hope comes when we share our stories,
Love and prayers,
Karen Channon
