Kingdom Financial Holdings Ltd. Case Study

Background:

In 1994 Nigel Chanakira purchased the Dynamics of Successful Management program. His focus goal was to establish a financial services company in Zimbabwe with the following objectives:

• Vision: To be a leading provider of professional financial services in global markets
• Mission: To provide superior returns and an excellent service based on sound business values
• Business Focus: financial securities trading, fund management and banking.

Nigel had a master’s degree in economics and had worked in banking and insurance previously but had never operated his own business.

Program Launch:

Several months into the program Mr. Chanakira launched Kingdom Financial Holding in November 1994 with US$17,320.

Over the next seven years the company grew to over US$6,430,000 in shareholder wealth. This represented growth of 371 times the original investment.

By 2001 five new divisions had been launched:

• DCZ Ltd. (Registered Discount House)
• Kingdom Stockbrokers Ltd. (Members of ZSE)
• Kingdom Asset Management
• Kingdom Bank (Registered Commercial Bank)
• Kingdom Research Institute

Over these seven years Mr. Chanakira enrolled his mid-level and senior executive staff in SMI programs while he enrolled in several other SMI programs including our core program, ‘The Dynamics of Personal Goal-Setting.’

Results:

• 1996 Kingdom Financial Holding Ltd. was awarded a citation by KMPG for the highest return on capital by a Zimbabwean institution
• 1997 Nigel Chanakira was nominated as the SMI World Client of the Year
• 2001 Nigel Chanakira recognized by the World Economic Forum as a Global Leader of Tomorrow
• 2001 Nigel Chanakira received the Zimbabwe Institute of Management, Manager of the Year Award
• 2001 Kingdom Financial Holdings voted the Top Company on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange
• 2002 Private placement of preference shares of US$15,000,000
• 2002 Expanded Kingdom Financial Holdings across sub-Saharan Africa opening business units in South Africa, Botswana, Zambia and Malawi

Mr. Chanakira’s lifetime goal is to:

“Build a global financial services organization over the next 35 years that impacts the underdeveloped community, advances God’s Kingdom and lasts generations.”

Mr. Chanakira still uses his SMI program and continues to use SMI as a resource to develop the individuals associated with his company as Kingdom Financial Securities moves into its first decade of business.
